[11/28/11] Monday Memories: Braces

On Tuesday, June 3, 2008, I got braces! I had wanted them for a long time, but since my teeth weren't really "that" bad, my plan was to wait until all my kids were done with their braces. And since Kailen just got hers on in June, that would've been a very. long. time.

Here's what I wrote about that day on my other blog (the blog I gave up on a long time ago...):

Today, at the age of 41 1/2, I got braces. It's a fun story, actually. Our awesome orthodontist, who's treated Kam and is currently treating Parker, had a Mother's Day Essay Contest and the prize to the winning essay was a FREE set of braces for that patient's mom. Kam, along with over 100 other patients, entered an essay about why her mom should get free braces. Last Wednesday we got the call from Dr. Graham that we'd won!!! Very exciting! So Kam and I went to the orthodontist today, like we have dozens of other times, except today I was in the chair and she sat by me for moral support. All the techs, who we know very well by now, kept coming over to me and telling me how much they all loved Kam's essay, and that it had made them cry.

It's been an interesting 6 hours so far. I'm finding it hard to chew, and I should market this as the newest weight loss program, because I don't want to eat anything because then I have to clean the silly things out! I don't like anything on my teeth, so this is definitely different. Not complaining, just explaining. I'm actually very excited about this and Dr. Graham says they should be off in 12-18 months. I'm hoping they'll be off before Zach gets home in 16 1/2 months. And I could possibly beat Parker in the removal of braces..............we'll have to see! :o)

**Here's the update: I got my braces off on November 17, 2009, a month after Zach got home. Parker did get his braces off before I did, but not by much. And boy, do I have a whole new sense of sympathy for anyone in braces. Especially when they get tightened. And when you have to wear those awful rubber bands. And when you have those big C chains put on. And when.....you get my drift.

But it was soooo worth it!

  1. Great! It was the right decision to let your kids have their braces first. Look what good karma got you now! :D I think that’s a very nice way - if it can be called that - to encourage patients. But about your experience, what you said about having a new sense of sympathy for those who wear braces. Being in braces isn’t easy. Before you get those healthier and straighter teeth, you would have to endure months of a different eating lifestyle, discomfort, and occasional pain. But it was worth it, right? :)
