[10/24/12] Wednesday Wellness: Compromise

Monday was a coldish day and I had a ton of schoolwork to do since I played at Time Out For Women Friday night and Saturday and therefore didn't get any homework done over the weekend like I usually do (More on TOFW at a later date).

John came home from lunch, which is a really nice fringe benefit of having his office 5 minutes from home. I mentioned that I really wanted a grilled cheese sandwich (because grilled cheese sandwiches are one of my most favorite comfort foods), but that since I had enjoyed several treats over the weekend (Utah Mint Truffles!!!), and I was really trying to be "good," I probably should not. He said, in a stroke of brilliance, "Why don't you just make a 1/2 sandwich?"

Uhhh......duh.

That option had not even entered into my head.

So that's what I did:

And it was yummy! I also ate some left over steamed vegetables from the night before, and I used butter spray to make it all pretty and brown and buttery instead of butter or margarine.

See how "good" I was?!

It was a great compromise. I got what I was craving but didn't rob the calorie bank.

Later that afternoon I was plowing through my schoolwork and I really wanted that last dark-chocolate-with-extra-chocolate-chips brownie that Kailen had made over the weekend. I also had an assignment for my Environmental Stewardship class that I needed to get done but I really didn't want to do it. It was a blog entry about which method of water apportion I think is best: prior appropriation or groundwater irrigation. Exciting stuff, no? At that moment in time I really didn't care. Although the class has actually been really interesting. Like the food I ate Monday took 816.33 gallons of water to produce.

Yeah, interesting!

But I just wasn't in The Mood to work on that blog entry.

So I compromised again.

I told myself that as soon as I finished the assignment I could eat my brownie.

And it worked!

And though I probably would've eaten the brownie anyway, I got the assignment done too. I kind of earned that brownie.

Win-win.

That's what compromise is all about. With nutrition, it's about finding a way to get some of what you want without totally sabotaging your calorie count for the day. Or finding a compromise between eating what you want and not eating what you want by making what you want into a reward that helps you get something else accomplished. Does that make sense?

And oftentimes, "some" is enough.
