[9/19/12] Wednesday Wellness: Talk But Not Sing.

One very important aspect of a successful cardio program is making sure you're working hard enough but not too hard.  Hence, the title of this post:

The Talk But Not Sing Rule

With The Talk But Not Sing Rule you want to be able to do exactly that during your cardio: talk but not sing.  You don't want to be able to talk like you'd talk during a normal conversation with a friend, but you do want to be able to talk. Although you should be a bit breathy while you're talking. If you can't talk, you're working too hard.

On the flip side, if you can sing while you're doing your cardio, you're not working hard enough.

Now of course there are other, much more scientific and gadget-requiring ways to monitor how hard you're working, but this way is simple, and requires no gadgets or any science.

You just talk (breathily) and don't plan on singing. If you must sing, sing during your warm-up and/or cool-down.

Or when you're in the shower when you're all done exercising.

Either works just fine.
