[7/17/12] The Beach. Times two. And other stuff.

We took a short vacation over the weekend. We wanted to get away for a longer period of time, but with three kids working (hard to get days off) and John's startups (yeah! for new business!), 4 days was the best we could do.

And boy, did we pile a lot into those four days!

Day 1:

We drove to Savannah on Thursday and went to the Riverfront.  It's kind of amazing that the first shop we found was where we buy our Pecan Pralines! Buying (and eating) Pralines was high on our list of things to do on our vacation.

I wanted to take a picture of us eating our Pecan Pralines, but, ummm, they didn't last long enough.  But they were yummy!

Then we walked around downtown Savannah for a bit and almost walked onto the set of a movie shoot:

The movie is called CBGB and has Rupert Grint (Ron from Harry Potter), Ashley Greene (from Twilight), Fran Drescher's mother from The Nanny, and some other stars. We saw some of the actors, but they were in long hair and sort of grunge costumes with dark glasses, so we couldn't tell who we were looking at. It was pretty cool!

We walked some more and found these sites:

Savannah City Hall
I love Savannah. John took me there for our 10 year anniversary and we went on a horse-drawn carriage ride and saw so many beautiful homes and buildings. Savannah is one of the few places that wasn't totally burned during the Civil War. Rumor has it that one of the Union generals had a mistress in Savannah and so it was spared.

When we were done sightseeing in downtown Savannah (it was really hot!), we went to Olive Garden for dinner - a family favorite.

Then we went back to the hotel and enjoyed the hot tub.

Day 2:

We drove to Hilton Head first thing and spent some time at Coligny Beach. This beach was recommended to us by a cashier at one of the three Walmarts we visited (one in Savannah, one in Hilton Head, and one in Tybee Island. We can always seem to find a Walmart. But finding other things is sometimes a difficult thing for us, as will be explained below). The beach and its facilities were awesome. It was clean, and although it was crowded, it was, to say it again, awesome!

There were some great waves, and the kids had fun with the boogie boards. They had to hold onto Kam so she wouldn't get dragged away by the waves, and I got knocked off my feet a few times, too. Thankfully, my kids and John saved me. :o)

We left Coligny Beach after a couple of hours, and even though we sunscreened really well - twice - we now have lobster children.

But it sure was fun!

Friday night at the hotel we played a new game that some friends introduced us to - Telestrations. It was really fun and we laughed. A lot.

Day 3:

Saturday morning we drove over to Tybee Island.

We didn't tour the battery or the lighthouse, but we did take some pictures:

I don't know what it is about lighthouses, but I love them.  Several of my watercolors have lighthouses in them.

Our original plan was to spend another day at the beach. But due to the aforesaid lobster children, we changed the plan and Kam and I settled for spending a few minutes on this while the rest of the family waited oh so very patiently for us in the air conditioned car (because it was H-O-T!):

I love the beach, probably due to my Southern California roots. I remember many times when I was much (much!) younger we'd go to the beach after my dad got home from work.

It was awesome!

I could seriously live at the beach.

I love the beach smells and especially the sound and motion of the waves.

Maybe that's a part of my love of lighthouses?

Hmmm...

Anyways.

After the (short) time at the beach we went and played miniature golf.

Let me just say the PGA won't be calling us anytime soon. There were several water hazards and we hit our balls into every. single. one. Sometimes twice. Even John hit a ball into one once (how did I not get a picture of that?!).

We had a great time and John won, of course. Which would be expected since he golfs much more often than the rest of us do.

Kailen had quite the style:

At The End.

Parker really did have fun.
Since it was soooo hot, we decided to go to Dairy Queen. After one solid hour we finally found one. And it was closed. We had a few GPS problems this trip.

So we settled for this instead (hey, the "HOT" sign was on. Who can resist the "HOT" sign?):

Parker, Kam and I finished up the day in the hot tub.

And it felt so good!

Day 4:

Headed home.  And although it was good to be home, we really could've used a few more days.

But isn't that true with any vacation?
