[3/7/12] Wednesday Wellness: What happens to all those calories?

I'm teaching a class called "Nutrition For A Healthy Life" at our Stake Relief Society Activity on the 24th.  This slide asks a great question:

The answer is a bit surprising: 55-75% of all the calories we eat are used up even if we don't move a muscle all day.

All. Day.

And I don't know anyone that doesn't move a muscle all day.

That's why low calorie diets are so dangerous. For one thing, our bodies aren't getting the nutrition they need to even perform the smallest of bodily functions. For another thing, our bodies know we're starving them and they start to conserve all our fat and calories so we don't starve.

Our bodies are very smart.

The best way to be healthy is to eat of healthy calories, in moderation, and to exercise.

Sound simple?

It really is.

Calories in.  Calories out.

No fancy formulas.

No dos and don'ts.

Just smart choices every day.

And when we "mess up," we just keep going.

Every day is a new day.
