[2/8/12] Wednesday Wellness: Sleep

Getting the right amount of sleep is so important in order to simply feel good, and studies have shown that it is also crucial in maintaining a healthy weight (or for losing weight).

Here's the low-down:

Sleep and Weight Loss/Weight Maintenance:

How important is sleep for weight loss?  Very important!

When you don’t get enough sleep:

1  More of a hormone called ghrelin, which increases your appetite, is  secreted by your stomach.

2  Less of a hormone called leptin, which tells your body you’re full, is secreted by your fat cells.

So in effect, not getting enough sleep is a double whammy – your body increases your appetite and doesn’t tell you you’re full, so you eat more and more during the day.

Adequate sleep also helps decrease the risk of other potential health problems.  The recommended amount of sleep per night is between 6-8 hours.

One of my goals is to get more sleep. I'm a night owl and I get up really early with my kids, so this is a really hard one for me. But I know that when I do get enough sleep, I don't have the cravings for those sugary mid-afternoon snacks as often, and life just goes better. I feel like my brain works better and I get more done.

But even though I know about these benefits, it's still really hard...

But I can do hard things. :o)
