[1/18/12] Wednesday Wellness: Hunger Rating Chart

I've been working on a class on nutrition and fitness that I'm teaching our YW next week.

Here is one of the slides from the class:

Overeating is a problem for a lot of people. We forget that it takes some time for our stomach to tell us we're full, and many of us are so busy that we eat like we're going to a fire. Or we get busy talking and don't pay attention to how much we're eating until it's too late.

The key to not overeating is to stop at #5 from the chart above. We need to stop when we feel "perfectly comfortable," not when we reach #9 and it's time to put on the elastic-waisted pants. It's also a good idea to slow down when we eat, put our forks down on the plate in between bites, and take the time to really enjoy our food.

We also don't want to wait to eat until we're at #2, because we will often overeat and eat anything we can find. Which is usually not a good thing.

When deciding when it's time to eat, shoot for between #3 and #4. When deciding when it's time to stop eating, shoot for #5.

You'll feel better and you won't need those elastic-waisted pants anymore.

:o)
