Fifteen years ago today we called John's mom early in the morning to wish her a Happy Birthday, and to tell her we were giving her the best birthday present ever.
A new granddaughter!
My labor with Kailen was a little different. After our experience with Parker's birth, where I was in labor and walking the hospital halls for hours and hours and hours....I wasn't going to the hospital for Kailen's birth until I absolutely had to. John and I were watching TV the night before she was born and my stomach was contracting, like it had been for weeks (those lovely Braxton Hicks kind). After a few minutes he said, "These are pretty regular. I've been timing them and they're about 5 minutes apart."
I said, "But I'm not walking for hours and hours again." He suggested I try and walk around and see if they'd stop.
They didn't.
We called the doctor and he said to get to the hospital.
I was very thankful I listened to John and my doctor because Kailen was born not long after we got to the hospital. She didn't wait around like her older sister and brothers had done.
Kailen entered the world 3 hours and 37 minutes into her due date. And boy, did she enter the world! She weighed in at 10 (10!) pounds even and was 21 1/2 inches long. Unlike the 41" waist I had right before I had Zach, my waist measured 58" right before I had Kailen. Unbelievable.
She was so cute! She already had cute rolls, chubby cheeks, red hair fuzz and the prettiest blue eyes. Ever.
Kailen and Dr. Sachs (who also delivered Parker)
Kailen and her first bath. She obviously loved it. I had lots of "help."
Kailen with Kam (5), Zach (8) and Parker (almost 3)
Kailen on her blessing day. My mom crochetted this blessing
dress which both Kam and Kailen wore.
Kailen really didn't scream for all her pictures. I think we must've caught her at a bad time for these.
Kailen has been a joy to have as our "caboose" (that's what she calls herself). She has always been a good girl, she knows what she wants, she knows what's right, and she does it. She is very organized, a great student, and she likes to hang out with me. For a teenage girl, I think that's pretty awesome.
I went to the Homecoming game with her a few weeks ago. She asked me if I'd go with her, and of course, I said "yes!" Her friends would come and talk to her while we were watching the game, and I told her several times that I would be totally fine with her going to sit with her friends. She said "no" every time. I loved that! She wanted to be with her mom instead of her friends. :o)
I'm thankful for the relationship we have. We each have our own opinions, and different likes and dislikes, but we get along great. Kailen likes to run errands with me and we study together pretty much every day. She likes to bake, which is very helpful! She also is learning to cook, which is really nice.
I'm so thankful she's my daughter!
