[10/3/11] Monday Memories: General Conference

The Conference Center
This past weekend, and the first weekend in April, are two of my most favorite weekends of the year.  During these weekends we watch General Conference. Since moving to Georgia, and since we don't have satellite anymore, and since our cable company doesn't carry BYUTV, we watch conference over the internet.

I am so thankful for the internet!

We have some General Conference traditions:

-we try really, really hard to not plan anything else on conference weekend.

-we watch conference in comfy clothes. This year that meant sweats because it suddently got quite chilly here.

-we have conference treats: chips, candy, cookies, and so forth.

-we have a conference breakfast on Sunday morning. This year it was muffins, eggs, bacon and juice. And some yummy cinnamon rolls some friends brought over.

We haven't always had the luxury of watching General Conference at home. Before we moved to Arizona we got to go to a local church building and watch conference. Most of the time that church building wasn't close to our house so watching General Conference became an all-day event. We'd take a picnic lunch to eat in between the two sessions, and when the kids were little we'd take quiet conference-related activities for them to do during conference ("General Conference Bingo" and "count how many times you hear these words" were always favorites). By the end of the last session on Sunday, we were all pretty tired.

But it's the most wonderful kind of tired. The kind of tired when your brain is so full of great new counsel and inspiration from the Lord's leaders that it can't take one. more. thing.

Thankfully all the conference talks are printed in our church magazine, The Ensign, in November and May, so I can go back and study them again and again.

We actually went to General Conference as a family in April 2007. Zach was at BYUI so he met us in Salt Lake City. It was an amazing experience. "Attend General Conference as a family" had been on my family bucket list for quite some time, so it was awesome to be able to finally cross that one off my list.

Here are some pictures from the weekend:

The Salt Lake Temple

All of us. We were a little tired by this time. :o)

The Tabernacle

We attended two sessions in the Conference Center and one in the Tabernacle. We missed the last session because we had to catch our flight back to Arizona.

While the guys were at the Priesthood session, the girls and I walked around Temple Square and looked at all the beautiful spring flowers, and we also went to Deseret Book. Deseret Book always has some amazing deals during conference weekend. :o)

(The women of the church attend a Relief Society Broadcast the Saturday night before General Conference in October, and the Young Women of the church and their Mothers attend a Young Womens Broadcast the Saturday night before General Conference in April.)

For me, watching and listening to General Conference is the spiritual "shot in the arm" I need to get me through the next six months before the next General Conference is held. I often receive promptings into what I need to be doing or answers to questions I have. I feel uplifted and ready to do what I need to do after watching General Conference.

I love General Conference!
