[8/6/11] The End.

We finally got to see the last Harry Potter movie yesterday. We've been a little bit busy, you see, and we all haven't been in the same zip code at the same time since the movie opened.

And it was awesome!

No disappointment from this Harry Potter fan, for sure.

I must say, though, that I'm a bit sad that the Harry Potter movies are over. It seems like Harry's been a part of our lives for so many years. I've read all the books at least twice, and there's always been the next movie to look forward to for almost as many years. And now it's all over.

Done. Finito.

A few years ago one of the books was released at midnight the night before I left for Education Week. My friend Melynda and I went to Barnes & Noble to get our midnight copy, then I voraciously read it at the airport and on the plane the next day. At the airport I was sitting across from a young brother and sister who were sharing their copy of the new Harry Potter book. One would read for a little while and then the other would take a turn. This was not the only copy of this book I saw at the airport and on the plane that day.

I think one of the positive things to come out of Harry Potter was that this character and this author had kids of all ages reading 800+ page books! Kids who were not normally readers were captivated by Harry and his author and her incredible imagination. We all entered a whole new world, and I know as I read I discovered themes of good and evil, friendship, choices, and courage, among others.

I've heard that J.K. Rowling was turned down numerous times by publishers who I would bet are now kicking themselves in the pants. Hard. I'm so thankful that someone finally saw the good that could come from these books and took a chance on Harry, and I'm equally as thankful that J.K. Rowling didn't give up.

I know that Harry is not everyone's cup of tea, but I know we'll definitely be adding this last movie to our DVD collection and I'm sure there will be more Harry Potter movie marathons at our house in years to come.

And I'm pretty sure that another reading of the series is in my future. Somewhere.

Thanks, Harry and J.K. Rowling, for a marvelous ride!
